Flaming is a thermal process obtained using oxygen and gas (propane or equivalent). The flame acts by striking the surfaces to treat at a high temperature (2500-3000°C) so that they are subject to thermal shock at about 600°C; this, combined with an immediate cooling of the surface with water, provokes a dilatation phenomenon and therefore the thermal splitting of the quartz or silicon. 

The surface texture is coarse and in relief, thereby highlighting the structure and colour of the material. As this vetrification increases resistance to atmospheric attacks and erosion, flaming is particularly indicated for outdoor facings, but must be carried out skilfully and only on marbles which resist greats heat swings.
